Performed without a conductor in a soloist-ensemble style, The Crown is a love letter to the English Madrigal. This deeply expressive art form, all but abandoned today, exhibits the full spectrum of human emotion to delightful, breath-taking effect. The program features works by Thomas Morley, Richard Carlton, and Thomas Tomkins, along with other 17th-Century English composers, and closes with later explorations of the genre.
